Not illustrated. 1922 Excerpt: ... Mr. C. M. Goodspeed, Skaneateles, N. Y. Dear Sir: I'm sending you, by parcel post, two ounces of wild ginseng and ten ounces of fine fiber, to pay for back subscription and the remainder in advance. I have one-quarter acre under shade; part of it broke down from the heavy ice we had last winter and I won't rebuild any more, as the ginseng is all rotted out, but will plant berry bushes instead, to be used for experiment as shade. The nicest wild ginseng I ever found grew in berry bushes as shade, which leads me to this venture. I have a small plot of Golden Seal where by shade went down three years ago. The plants get full sun light from 9 o'clock in the morning until 3 in the afternoon and have stood it successfully. My theory, confirmed by practice, is that most of the rot troubles are caused by too much water and heat combined.--Ed. Furs and Roots A. R. Harding In the March number the editor asked for articles suggesting "some other lines of business that will link in with Seal and ginseng to ...
